Sergio Sant’Anna
Sergio Sant’Anna was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1941 and has written novels, several volumes of short stories, and plays. His career as a writer began in the 1960s with the foundation of Estória, a magazine for experimental literature, which was later banned during the military dictatorship. In the 1970s he was part of Brazil’s literary avant-garde, which attempted to link experimental literary forms with revolutionary commitment. For several years, Sant’Anna was a lecturer in communication science at the University of Rio de Janeiro. He is one of Brazil’s most provocative writers and has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Jabuti Prize which he has received four times. His writings mainly portray the middle class over the past twenty years; in an often ironic, sarcastic manner, he depicts the political attitude of his generation against the backdrop of the social reality of his country.
