What wakes us up in the night? What makes the hairs rise on the back of our necks? What turns our stomach and makes us feel: this is wrong? The answers we give to these questions are often irrational, and defy logic. Like fingernails down a blackboard there is just something about them we can't explain that unnerves us. Various psychologists and theorists have tried to explain our irrational fears, or at least categorise them, and their explanations form the basis of Comma's 'theory horror' series. Freud's concept of the uncanny (das unheimlich), Julia Kristeva's theory of the abject, Mark Fisher's critique about late capitalism... of these have formed the bases for commissions; where Comma asks authors to respond to philosophical ideas with new fiction, putting flesh on the bones of the monster.
